iMovie + Logic Pro for post production: proper workflow?

Hello guys,

I have a question which I need to clarify before buying Logic (Studio).

I am editing video for my father - typically, 40 to 60 minute projects with hundreds of clips.

We are using iMovie, which is absolutely sufficient with regards to video features, but has a bug that sometimes breaks the (Audio) Ducking feature. Also, positioning and adjusting several audio tracks (FX, music) is cumbersome in iMovie.

Therefore, I consider buying Logic and doing all the audio fine-tuning there.

This is the workflow I’m thinking of:

1) Finish video editing in iMovie
2) Export the movie in QuickTime format and use that as a guide in Logic
3) Extract original audio from the movie to a Logic track
4) Add voiceover, FX and music tracks (both pre-produced clips and "real" MIDI/audio tracks), adjust volumes, EQ etc.
5) Finally, replace the movie’s audio track with the bounced audio from Logic and use this edited movie as a master (e.g. for DVDs).

I just browsed Apple’s online user manual for Logic, and it describes the „Import/Exporting Audio Tracks to QuickTime Movies“ feature. This seems to be what I want for the above workflow, but there’s a sentence that makes me a bit nervous:

+„This is useful for sending a rough mix of your film soundtrack to other members of the production team, for example.“+

This doesn’t sound like this is the usual, „proper“ workflow.

So my questions are:

How would you approach the above scenario (video in iMovie, all audio in Logic)? Are there better ways to fine-tune audio without buying Final Cut Express/Pro?

Will „Export Audio to Movie“ give professional results (i.e., a soundtrack that is aligned with frame precision to the movie), or should I expect problems?

Any other thoughts?

Thank you for your help.

Hi,
yes, you can do it all in Logic Pro and there are a lot of professionals that do it that way!
You have all the tools to do it and get professional results, depending only on your skills.
The workflow you described is absolutely correct. 😉
Also part of Logic studio you get Soundtrack Pro, that can be used for some of those tasks or working in conjunction with Logic sending the files back and forth between apps to fine tuning.

About the other question the Final Cut studio also have the Soundtrack Pro in the bundle and it's great for editing, but once you make the music and have all the control of it, the perfect tool for you is Logic Studio, as you must know, after all you did your homework, you just want to make sure right?

About the Apple sentence: you miss understood the meaning, sending a row mix to approval (over the net) using say mp3 format, doesn't mean you can't have the best sound quality on a session,
you just exported quality wise depending the tasks you need, do surround if you want (if you have interface and surround monitor system) Compressor (encoder) also comes in Logic Studio.
Sure you can aligned with frame precision.
Also a good investment (music for picture in Logic) from macprovideo (have a look at the demo videos)

I do this work, on Logic and sky's the limit! 🙂
Cheers mate,
Jorge
