Can iPhone erase on find my iPhone if it was accidentally pressed

I was tracking a phone on find my iPhone on safari and I accidentally hit erase iPhone but I deleted the tab before it completed, would it still delete the whole iPhone and what happens when you press erase iPhone will it need confirmation from the device to do so?
