Mac Mini M1 - 32:9 UHD 5120x1440 over HDMI

Hello,

I have a Mac mini M1 and a Philips 499P ultra wide monitor with native resolution of 5120x1440. I am able to get the full resolution using DisplayPort over USB-C just fine. However, over HDMI, with a high quality premium certified cable, I am only able to get 3840x1080 resolution.

Unfortunately this is undesirable as I use the only USB-C input on my monitor as a dock for a laptop (supports usb inputs + video + power). This leaves DisplayPort and HDMI inputs available for the Mac.

Is it possible to use 5120x1440p resolution on the Mac mini over HDMI?

Apple states in their M1 Mac mini specs that the HDMI port supports up to 4K@60Hz (3840x2160). That excludes 5120 x anything from the HDMI port.

The M1 Mac mini has an HDMI 2.0 port, which by design specifications, has a max resolution of 3840 x 2160. Higher resolutions only come with the HDMI 2.1 spec. So, as VikingOSX stated, 3840 horizontal resolution is the most you will get.

While this is true, I thought the limitation was a bandwidth issue, not purely resolution? 4k (3840x2160) is more pixels than 5120x1440, so I expected it to be fine. Regardless I'm using the USBC port so it's working fine. The HDMI input on my monitor is just essentially useless if nothing can push full-res at 60hz.

Unfortunately, Apple does not list all resolutions supported, I do have 3840x1600 which is "kind of" in that range, but it's hard to tell if HDMI 2.0 supports that or not.
