Sometimes when I return my air pod pro their case they don't disconnect from my device. When I get a phone call or message etc. the notification goes to the air pod so there is not sound or ring on my phone. If I happen to look at my phone, i can still answer the call but the ring is silenced.

Hmm, is the cover of the charging case securely closed? That action should turn off the AirPods and the speakers should revert to the iPhone. Also see:

In the meantime, until you get if figured out, try this:
1) Open the Control Center
2) Long press on the music controls
3) Select the output option (little up-arrow with circles)
4) Select iPhone
