Xcode

I have been running Fortran programs for many years. Now when I try to open a Fortran program I get a message telling me that I have to install supplementary Xcode software. When I hit the Install button in the window containing the message I, the installation process is interrupted by a second message informing me that an error of unknown origin has occurred. What has changed? How do I restore capability to run Fortran programs on my Mac?

Xcode requires Mac OS 10.14.4 or later. Your Mac OS is too old to run the current Xcode. You might want to find another Fortran compiler that still runs on the older OS. Check to see if 10.14 is compatible with your Mac:
