I cannot update the software on my macbook air 2008. What should i do?

I am using macbook air 2008 and nothing work with the old software, so when i go to software update they say that my software is up to date but i have the macos 10.7.5 an old version, i cant use anything with this version so whats should i do to update my software

If your MacBook Air is an early 2008 model, you can't. Otherwise, back up your data, check your applications for compatibility, and download El Capitan.

You want to upgrade, not update. Software Update only checks for changes to the version you are using, not upgrades. How far you can upgrades depends upon computer specification your have not yet provided. To get more information about your computer, go to the Apple in the upper left corner of any window, then "About This Mac", then "More Info..." Copy and paste the information here, but omit the serial number and Hardware UUID (if present).
