Transferring video from 1995 Hitachi camcorder to Mac

I have a 1995 Hitachi camcorder with lots of old videos I would like to transfer to digital form by transferring them to my Mac. I have searched and searched and have found no information or helpful videos. Are there specific cables required? I have iMovie. I also have a PC I could use with Windows Vista. I really don't want to send these tapes off to a company and appreciate any help anyone can provide. Thank you!

You’re going to have to buy some stuff.

Your Hitachi camera is going to have some sort of analog out port. You need to take that output and run it into a converter box of some type. The converter will change the analog signal to digital which you then connect to your Mac.

the most likely set up is this:

  • Hitachi - it probably has three analog outputs, 1 video and 2 audio.
  • A cable with three male RCA jacks on one end and a single male end (mini jack) on the other
  • an old DV sony handy cam that accepts the mini jack as input and has a DV output port.
  • A DV cable with the right connector (small FireWire 400) for the Sony and the right connector for your Mac. Probably a FW400 to FW800
    • Depending on your Mac you will need connectors to convert the FW800 to thunderbolt or USB-C

so, the set up connects the hitachi to the Sony with the 3-to-1 analog cable and connects the Sony to your Mac with a DV cable with the right connectors. You then capture the video in iMovie or, if you get audio sync issues, LifeFlix or similar special purpose software.
