iPad Pro “unlock iPad to use usb accessories”

Every time I plug in a usb type c hub into my iPad Pro it says “unlock iPad to use usb accessories”. But the problem is that it keeps repeating that message every 3 seconds and it doesn’t let me click “OK”. This message not only appears in the Lock Screen, it appears in the Home Screen. Is it my iPad that is bad, or is the adapter not meant to work with the iPad Pro?

This message that you see is very likely related a security setting that protects your iPad from attack via the USB Port.

For your protection, the ability to access USB devices when the iPad is locked should be disabled:

Settings > TouchID & Passcode > USB Accessories - set to OFF

As a diagnostic measure, you might temporarily set this setting to ON - before returning it to the more secure setting of OFF.

A forced-restart of your iPad may be helpful - as this will often resolve an isolated issue:

  • On an iPad with a Home button: Press and hold the top button and the Home button at the same time. When the Apple logo appears, release both buttons.
  • On other iPad models: Press and quickly release the volume up button, press and quickly release the volume down button, then press and hold the top button. When the Apple logo appears, release the button.
