software update

I have an iphone 5 with ios 10.3.4.

how do I get an ios update to 12.5 or ios 14.3? the reason i'm asking is because i tried downloading a free gmail app and the system said i needan upgrade to ios 12.5 to get the app. tried updating but the phone says its upto date with ios 10.3.4
