Why does the screen on my iPhone XS keep lighting up ever 3-4 seconds?

Why does the screen on my iPhone XS keep lighting up ever 3-4 seconds? It’s draining my battery & the back of my phone is getting really hot. The phone is left on a cool flat surface a majority of the time.

See these steps:

1) Restart your phone

2) Operating temperature: Keeping iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch within acceptable operating temperatures

3) Battery health: Charge and monitor the iPhone battery
