How do you add a ringtone to your iPhone?

Hi all,

How do you add a ringtone to your iPhone? I used to be able to drag my new ringtone into iTunes, but there is no longer an iTunes, it's this hard to work with Apple Music. Seriously, you can't even search music if you don't know what genre it falls under- no way to search via title. Also, how do you set up apple music to go to an external hard drive that is attached? I had that in iTunes but not in Apple music.

I want my really old iTunes back! The one when you can add stuff from records and other streaming services just by drag and drop or import and it lets you play stuff without a what-ever tag that wasn't on cd's when they first came out. I can't even burn those songs to cd's. Even if I made it in GB. It's very frustrating.

That's all well and good, but when you go to big sur, or the latest update for it. Itunes is deleted. It's not in my applications folder. I didn't delete it. It's also not in the relocated items on my desktop. I don't know why it's deleted but it's gone. I have to do this through apple music unless I can download itunes? I don't see it in the app store. I did do it the way the post said when I changed a ringtone. Can I do it through Garage Band? Don't get me wrong, I've had an Apple since Apple II +. I've never had so much problems with a program up till now. Why is this so hard?

I see that someone updated the page (probably you) after I responded to your reply last time. Thanks. I'll be trying it today. The what happened to itunes one doesn't help so much. I had talked with support earlier in the year and we hashed it all out(more than just itunes) but I appreciate the work.

I can't move .m4r files to my iPhone from my M1 MacBook Air. When I drag a ringtone to the main screen of the iPhone in Finder, the system becomes slow and nothing happens -- the icon of the ringtone just bounces back. These are ringtones that I have previously had on my phone in the past.

Memory failed me. This is the correct approach for Big Sur and Catalina.

Add ringtone to device, macOS 10.5 Catalina or later

Connect your device to your Mac, and open the general tab for it in Finder.

Drag and drop your .m4r file from another open Finder window to the General tab for your device.

You should see a green plus on the dragged file before you release it.
