You can't. They require an iMac to be a 2012 or newer model.

Mac stuck on checking for updates while updating macOS I'm trying update my 2017 iMac to Big Sur 11.6.4 from Big Sur 11.6.3 and all I get is a spinning wheel in "checking for updates". Is there any way to fix this [Re-Titled by Moderator]
