Warning - iPhone4 glass breaks easily

Front glass of my iPhone4 shattered yesterday when I got out of the car. Fell from my lap to the pavement and that was all she wrote. Short fall, a little higher than knee height.

Checking around, the glass is not as durable as Apple would have you think. There are lots of shattered iPhones and it's only a month old. I have their bumper too to protect it so it isn't like I haven't taken precautions.

So what's with designing a cell phone out of glass? Two sheets of relatively thin glass. Seeing how easy it shattered I think this is a poor design. Certainly not one I can recommend.

I never really bought the stronger glass claims. Glass is glass and will break if it hits something harder than it is. Even airplane and helicoptor glass breaks when something hits hit. No matter what they say about the glass I would not leave the phone unprotected. And those bummpers give no protection of the glass at all.

I agree the 2 panes of glass isnt the best design durability wise but it sure makes for a nice looking phone.

Yes glass breaks. And the iPh4 has a glass front and back. But of course you knew that when you decided to buy it, didn't you?

Mine's been in a case since June 23, providing some protection.

The glass is actually more durable for many impacts and usages. But if the iPhone strikes on a corner or edge, then the screen can crack or break. No cell phone, unless specially ruggedized, can be counted on to withstand being dropped several feet onto a hard surface. Many survive, and the iPhone 4 from tests conducted by at least one independent web site (who love to abuse new products just to find out such things) show that the iPhone 4 really isn't that fragile. iFixYouri.com had to drop the iPhone 4 four times onto concrete from three feet up before they got it to break, so the iPhone 4 is not proving to be unusually likely to be damaged from a drop.

Sorry that luck was not with you. Perhaps your credit card plan will cover the damage.

Regards.

Sounds like you shouldn't forget the phone in your lap when you're getting out of the car. Glass is glass. It will break if it hits the ground at the right angle.

The bumper is not meant as a safety feature to protect the glass. If you're prone to dropping phones, you want to use a real case.

Call your credit card company and see if they cover accidental damage.

I had the same exact thing happen to me. Shattered the screen after a VERY short fall.

Apple charged me $200 to replace the phone after I'd had it for 2 weeks.

I dropped my 3GS several times from this same height or higher and it never affected the screen in any way.

Not a good design for durability... what ****** me off the most is that Apple will replace the piece of glass and resell the phone for a huge profit, they gave me NO option to repair, only to buy a new phone.

I'm sure if you take the phone to an Apple store and explain your story, they'll probably replace it for you. I've had iPhones replaced from my local Apple store for things that were blatantly my fault. Customer Satisfaction is usually a big factor, although don't abuse it. They don't take too kindly if you bring it in for a second time.

If that doesn't work, you can make up some B*S story how you thought the Bumper was a "protective case" and would protect your phone and why would Apple make a case to begin with if it doesn't offer protection, etc. My friend tried this and had his iP4 replaced as a courtesy.

If you get a new one, buy a real case for it and don't break it. As previously alluded, you're not likely to get 2 freebies from Apple.

Greetings,

Define a VERY short fall. I dropped mine off my desk, to a hard tile floor, twice, it survived fine. Once it fell on it's back, the other it fell on a corner. It can take some punishment.

The back is scratched a little, but that's no big thing, and I earned it, and is in no way Apple's fault - I got what I paid for. The phone works perfectly, in every respect, still. Will I get it fixed? No, it's just a scratch, 2 inches long, but the phone works fine.

You knew it was made of glass, so you should have expected that that could happen. As far as being tougher than regular glass, it doesn't matter, it's all subjective. Glass is glass, and can break, if mistreated enough.

Cheers,
M.

The durability test Apple performed this under is by using a hydraulic pressure against it. Placing several pounds of pressure to bend the glass is one thing. Apple hasn't proven it can't shatter nor provided any videos claiming they know it's fragile.

PS: This has been discussed since April/May via ModMyI and after June 23rd with a full-part phone. It's nothing new. They also tested it on Apple's bumpers and face down and flip hands smashes the glass after four accidental attempts.
