I completely agree with previous requests and questions - you should be able to backup entire MacOS system using TimeMachine to iCloud Drive - its 2021,m how is this not possible yet?
I've purchased Thunderbolt compatible external hard drives before and eventually they break or become corrupt - this is where cloud linked services such as iCloud have a huge opportunity to add the same technology such as iCloud to innovate
Hopefully this is enable soon!
