Kobo eReader does not connect to MacBook Air, M1 chip

I received a Kobo Clara HD as a present for Xmas but it won't connect to the new MacBook Air (M1)

It is simply not seen as a device, no matter if I install and run the Kobo App or try different USB cables or whatever.

It is not listed under the USB devices, I tried to run the Os in the Safe Mode but to no avail.

The MacBook has the latest OS BigSur 11.1

Anyone experiencing the same problem?

Any solution?

Thanks for any suggestion.

Luca

Hi, Lux61.

We understand that you’re trying to connect your Kobo Clara HD eReader to your new MacBook Air, but your MacBook isn’t detecting that your eReader is connected via the USB ports. It sounds like you’ve installed the Kobo Desktop app on your MacBook, and you’ve tried connecting with various cables, to no avail.

We suggest starting with the steps outlined in “Get the best performance from your USB devices” here:

About USB on Mac computers - Apple Support

Note that one of the steps outlines checking for an update. This article will help:

You can find a great library of troubleshooting details for your Kobo eReaders on the Kobo support page.

If you’re still not able to get your eReader to show, try this:

- Disconnect your eReader

- Restart your MacBook Air

- Reconnect your eReader using the USB cable that came with the device directly to your MacBook

- Check the System Report under Hardware > USB to see if your MacBook detects that a device is connected as outlined here:

About System Information on your Mac - Apple Support

If it doesn’t appear in System Report, it may be time to reach out to Apple Support for guidance.

Hello Kareng12,

I have gone through all the steps you mentioned before posting, but I wasn' t able to solve the problem.

I can add a few more checks that may be useful to isolate the issue.

The 2 MacBook USB-C ports, with the Apple adapter, are working properly with an external CD player, with different memory sticks , with a brand new Nikon Z5 and its provided cable and even with a somewhat 4 years old Kindle.

Only the Kobo eReader is not seen by the MacOs, no matter if the Kobo app is open or not.

As reported also by mtb_phil the Kobo eReader works operfectly with Windows 10 in my office and also with another older MacBook of a girlfriend of mine, that has USB-A ports though.

It seems that Kobo hasn't updated its software to allow the device to work with USB-C ports.

Hopefully they will do, at the moment the eReader is a bit useless.

Have a nice day and thank you for your detailed suggestions.

Luca
