I have something to add to this,

If some of steps suggested below by the other fellow users of the Apple Support communities do not work then please don’t try them (especially in terminal).

However, If you have set a hint for your password then try remembering your password based on that hint.

If none of the steps that any of us have suggested work then please do contact Apple Support they will be able to sort it out.

EDIT: Thank you for prompting me to confirm the steps I posted. Apple unexpectedly changed how the Password Reset system worked, and I somehow found a way to brick my Mac. Time to erase and restore from backup...
