Which dongle for usb mouse is better?

Hi! I’m planning on buying a dongle/adapter for my iPad so that I can use a mouse. However, I’m still choosing between the lightning to USB camera adapter or the lightning to USB 3 camera adapter. Which do you think is better to be used for an ordinary USB mouse?

iPad, iPadOS 14

Having found a new toy, you’ll be happily experimenting for hours 🙂

The Lightning to USB3 Camera Adapter supports USB3 transfer speeds when used with a newer model iPad - and is therefore much more flexible/useful is you ever need to connect external storage devices. You also benefit from a Lightning pass-through power connection. The auxiliary power connection is usually required when using storage devices with iPad. The iPad alone can only source sufficient power for very low power USB devices; iPad cannot provide sufficient power for the majority of external storage.

The cheaper alternative Camera Adapter only supports the much slower USB2 standard - and lacks the Lightning power connection. As such any external storage devices and card readers will either need to be self-powered (such as camera), or you would require an intermediate powered USB Hub.

Both versions of the Camera Adapter can be used with wired HID devices, such as wired keyboard and basic mouse (two/three button + mechanical scroll wheel). More complex mouse devices, that require installation of driver-software, are not supported by iOS/iPadOS.

For the small cost difference, if intending to use external USB devices, you would be best advised to only consider the Lightning to USB3 Camera Adapter.

It was a “no go” for the wired trackpad.

I been toying with the idea of getting either the Apple Magic Mouse II or Magic Trackpad II fof awhile just to use with my iPad and my flat, wide-armed lounge chair as a regular mouse needs too much room to operate and there is enough surface area on the chair arms to use a regular mouse.

Still, this is cool and it might turn out to be helpful for my mom's iPad as she is older now has had trouble with her fingers being able to always register a touch on the iPad's screen.

I have her currently using a Logitech Crayon to use as a touch/navigation tool and that seems to work pretty well for her for most things except typing.

I bought her a Bluetooth keyboard to use, but she forgets how to pair it and doesn't keep in charged up, so she can use it when she needs it!

Anyhoo, this was really a really cool discovery.

Thanks,

I was completely clueless to the whole wired mouse feature.

I'm done now!

I mean, the iPad Pro's Magic Keyboard actually uses contacts(not Bluetooth) to transfer the tracking and typing data, so theoretically, you can use wired mouses/keyboards on your iPad (running iOS 13/14), because that is Apple's official way of trackpad and keyboard usage on your iPad. I use a Lightning to USB-C cable to wire my Magic Keyboard 2 to my iPad Pro and it works perfectly fine.
