Suddenly discovered a serious keyboard problem on my MacAir early 2014, IOS Catalina.
The alphanumeric keys respond normally.
All the symbol keys are totally non sensical.
What can I do before I take into an Apple Store which is definitely problematic considering what we are all going through. In any case is the repair at the Apple Store totally free_

Go to system preferences > keyboard > input sources and make sure you only have ONE item on the list, and (assuming your normal language is English) that the name of this item is "US" or "ABC" or "British" and NOT "British PC". Get rid of British PC if it is there.
In system preferences > keyboard > text, uncheck the box for Add Period with Double Space.
Let us know if that helps and what is still not working.
If you normally type in a language other than English, let us know what that is.

If that's not what you want, then you should use a different input source. For US, these are

Please give specific examples. What do you get when you type Shift 1 thru 0. for example? What do you get when you type Option asdfg?
Quite difficult to write this out because of my keyboard

… this is ALT at as in email address…… *can-t get the symbol(. ……. This was meant to be in brackets
Space bar is a full stop and so forth
By symbols I mean not including letters and numbers i.e., which as you can see respond to the right keys
