Webpage reloaded because a problem occurred on text highlight Safari 14.0.2

Hi all, I'm encountering a peculiar issue on Safari 14.0.2 where I will highlight text on any web page, and a drop-down button appears. When I click that button, the webpage reloads, and a banner appears saying a problem occurred. See the attached images for a walkthrough of my issue.

Highlighting text on https://www.apple.com/iphone-12/

A zoomed-in shot of the drop-down button.

The banner that appears at the top after the page reloads from clicking on the drop-down button.

I can confirm this issue happens on both my 2013 Mac Pro and my 2020 Macbook Air with no extensions enabled.

Thanks in advance for the help!

Hello caden2k3,

Thanks for reaching out to the Apple Support Communities with your question. We want to help get you pointed in the right direction. We have a few steps to offer that may help to correct your issue.

First, Clear your browsing history in Safari on Mac and check to see if this helps to correct the issue. Also, check out this guide with the best steps for Safari troubleshooting on Mac.

You may also want to check to see if the issue is related to a specific user. If you do not have an alternate user you may need to create one to test with. Here's more information on how to Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac.

Best regards!

caden2k3,

We're glad you were able to test your login items. If removing those did not correct the issue, you may want to verify that the software is up-to-date. Are both the software and apps up-to-date on the Mac? Here's information on How to update the software on your Mac, and how to Use the App Store to update apps on Mac.

Also, a website can store cookies, caches, and other data on your Mac. Problems with that data can affect the use of a website. To prevent websites from using that data, view websites in a private window and see if the issue continues. To open a new private window, choose File > New Private Window. If the problem is solved, you will want to remove website data from your Mac.

Regards!

caden2k3,

We're glad that you're keeping the macOS software on your Mac computer up-to-date. Thank you for letting us know that the issue is present on the newest version. To clarify, did you have a chance to check and see if you have the problem while you're using a New Private Window? If not, check and see. Here's more information on how to Use Private Browsing in Safari on Mac.

If this does not help to isolate the issue, you'll want to Contact Apple for support and service.

Best wishes!

Hello caden2k3,

We're glad you were able to test and isolate the issue to a specific user on your Mac. Since you were able to narrow this down to a user related issue and not an overall Mac issue, you'll want to review and edit your login items. Check out this link to learn how to Remove login items to resolve startup problems on your Mac.

We hope this information helps you.

Cheers!
