Which type of band did you order, and did you order it directly from Apple? Most common Apple bands don't come in a size "medium". Solo loops use a numbered sizing system, Sport Loops include both a S/M and a M/L band in the box, and Sport Loops are one size and adjustable.
If you purchased direct from Apple's online Store you may be able to return for an exchange. Check the documentation which you should have received about your order and delivery.
