My wife is planning to buy a new iPad. Is it possible to have extra RAM added?

No internal hardware of iPad or iPhone can be updated, changed or modified. Whatever device configuration you choose (internal storage - and choice of either WiFi Only or WiFi+Cellular) is fixed for the entire usable life of the device.

RAM is a similarly fixed commodity - the RAM configuration being determined by the iPad model. 2020 models of iPad Pro have 6GB RAM, 2020 iPad Air has 4GB RAM, iPad8 and iPad mini5 have 3GB RAM.

Carefully consider your needs - and choose wisely; the only way to increase internal storage, or add Cellular capability, is to purchase a different model. Also consider that only WiFi+Cellular models of iPad include GPS functions; WiFi Only models have no GPS - and are entirely dependent upon the available network connection to estimate an approximate geographic location.

All of Apple's iPad models have a respectable amount of internal RAM in them witth the base model iPad 8th gen having 3 GBs of internal RAM,

The 2020 iPad Air 4 has 4 GBs of RAM ( my older iPad Pro has 4 GBs of RAM and iPadOS 14.2 just runs fine and dandy with this much RAM)

The newest 2020 iPad Pro models have 6 GBs of RAM

iOS/iPadOS is very optimised and makes good use of the internal RAM available.

Why do you feel the internal RAM in iPads is insufficient for your wife’s needs?

Are you referring to internal data storage?

Internal flash memory data storage in iPads is NOT expandable. So, purchase a device with as much internal data storage as you can possibly afford.
