Upgrading to newer OS

I have a 2009 imac which I've upgraded with a 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. I'm running El Capitan. Why can't I upgrade to any newer OS?

iMac, OS X 10.11

If it is a late 2009 iMac you should be able to upgrade to High Sierra. If not, El Capitan is the highest you can go.

In addition, a 2009 is way obsolete and simply does not have the hardware to run current versions of Mac OS. It also cannot be upgraded to run current versions. If you need to run Mojave, Catalina or Big Sur then you need a new(er) iMac. If you cannot afford to buy a new iMac there are many alternatives available to you such as buying an Apple Refurbished Mac from Apple or a used Mac from a trusted reseller.
