Is it just me, my app store will not let me download apps without a credit card being on my Iphone?

No, not just you. If your account has not been verified yet, or somehow stopped being verified, you require a valid payment method on it to complete verification and access to store services including downloading free apps.
Once the payment method has been authorized, it can be removed and should not ask for it again.
