One that can connect the ports on the old Mac to the common ports on the new Mac. For a span from pre-2010 to current, that would have to be USB-2
You could connect together a Thunderbolt-3 to ThunderBolt-2 adapter and a ThunderBolt-2 to FireWire, but that is expensive and likely not worth owning in the long run for a one-off use.
Another approach might be to acquire an Ethernet adapter for the newer Mac, and make an Ethernet connection through your Router. Gigabit Ethernet provides "near hard drive" speeds.

The Macs you mention have only Wi-Fi in common, but that will take a VERY long time. Usually the backup drive for the old Mac, using an adapter or enclosure is your best bet when the distance (in time) is large.
If you are needing to Transfer from your old MacBook to your New MacBook M1 you do not need a cable. Migration Assistant works very well for this.

Thanks for your response.
i used the migration tool to move data already. A few smart email folders didn’t transfer. Didn’t want to use migration tool again because this seems to move everything without letting you pick. I have my new Mac setup the way I want.
"smart" email folders are not real folders, They are logical collection, made up of emails that are in "real" folders.
You can re-create these "smart" folders without copying anything additional, if you know the rules used to create them initially.
