I am trying to download microsoft powerpoint and the app store is telling me I need to update my software. I have searched everywhere I'm told to do that and it isn't recognizing that I need a software update.

The App Store shows that PowerPoint requires macOS 10.14 or later.
You may or may not be able to upgrade your MacBook Air depending on what model year it is. You can find that at Apple menu > About this Mac.
