Optimise iPhone Storage

Due to storage limits I'm having the 'iCloud Photos' and 'Optimise iPhone Storage' options enabled on my iPhone, but there's one thing I'm not clear about it. Am I seeing the original photos in my Photos app on both my iPhone and iPad whenever I simply choose any of them, or they are of smaller versions? Because they still look as crisp and no different IMO before I've enabled those options.

iPhone XS Max, iOS 14

Photos does not automatically optimize all images and videos. It will keep the high resolution originals on your iPhone or iPad, until the storage gets low and it needs to free storage. Then it will remove the larger files of images or videos, that you have not used for a long time. Photos will remove the depth maps of portrait mode photos, originals image files, the video components of Live Photos and keep just the thumbnails for browsing. You may notice a short delay, before you can work with the optimised images or videos, while the removed parts will be downloaded from iCloud. But the most recently used images will only get optimised, if the iPhone is very low on storage. Usually you should rarely notice the "optimise" feature at all, if you have a fast internet connection and only a few items have been optimised.
