iPhone XS out of space and will not open settings or applications

My 64GB iPhone XS ran out of space and will not allow me to open any applications. When I try opening the settings to make more space a black screen appears and the application does not load. When I try to remove apps, I go through the process however it doesn't actually remove the app from my phone.

I also tried connecting to my Macbook Pro, when I click Trust on both devices it says "trust request denied. disconnect and reconnect your iphone."

Not sure what I can do to free up space when nothing opens.
