How can I stop web browser pages from crowding up my OS X dock?

In my dock – over to the right side between the "downloads" folder icon and the trash icon – there's always a dozen or so icons of web pages that I've got minimized in my various browsers is there a way to prevent them from appearing in the first place?

The icons take up a lot of UI space and are useless to me since I access them from inside the browser apps themselves.

(I'm on OS X Catalina)

MacBook Pro 15″, macOS 10.15

You can set it so that applications are minimized to their existing Dock icon, and not in the area you describe. Then, you right-click on the browser icon to see a list of open web pages that you can select. Less clutter.

System Preferences > Dock > √ Minimize windows into application icon, and [ ] Show recent applications in Dock.

In Big Sur, this would be in System Preferences > Dock & Menu bar panel.
