Photos not importing from iPhone to Mac

I am attempting to import my photos from my iPhone to my Mac. When I plug the iPhone into the Mac, go to my photo library, select my device, check to open photos for this device, below it indicates that the are no photos to import but there are 2,000 on my iPhone. why doesn't my Mac find my photos on my iPhone?
