Personal preferences.
The build-in trackpad goes with you everywhere, and can be used no matter where you setup your Macbook Air.
A mouse needs a surface of some kind, even if it is moving it along your leg. A mouse is extra stuff to carry with you. A mouse means you have to become proficient with both the trackpad and the mouse, when you travel with the Macbook Air without the mouse.
Having said that, it is still a personal preference.
I switched ONLY using trackpads in 2010 when Apple released the first Magic Trackpad, and I used it with my iMac. At the same time I started using BetterTouchTool, and was able to bind far more functions to trackpad gestures than I could on a mouse, even one with 9 buttons and a scroll wheel. The Trackpad with BetterTouchTool won hands down for me. I'm still using a Magic Trackpad II with my desk setup, even though the Mac is now a 13" Macbook Pro with a 32" external monitor attached.
