I have several older (2012) computers - can I have them recycled for free without making a purchase

Yes, Apple is willing to recycle any Mac for free.

However 2012 is new enough they might offer you an Apple Gift Card as credit for a future purchase. (Or you could get a bid from some Apple Authorized resellers. Or you could try reselling it yourself on Craigslist or like. Or... )
