Most of my Capture One catalogs, stored on an external HD have become "read only." This may have been something to do with my upgrade to Big Sur but I'm not sure. The "Get Info" popup shows I have a "Read & Write Privilege" for peterburge (Me) but says beneath Sharing & Permissions: "You can only read."

The File popdown has a listing to "Unlock" the catalog - I hit this button but it just reverts back to the "unlock" popdown. Capture One have been very helpful in trying to solve this issue but feel it may be an Apple issue? Not being too technical and getting on in years there is a high probability that I may be the issue! Being "read only" I cannot edit my catalogs in Capture One. However if I flip an image through to Photoshop I can work on it as per normal.

I have attached screen shots and happy to attach more if requested. Peter

Thanks for getting back to me Barney. I have been composing a reply that has taken some time because of a busy schedule. I've attached the "Get Info" dropdown for the "2019 January 1" Catalog, which doesn't seem to display the info you talk about. My iMac is a late 2015 model and I'm fairly sure I formatted the disc. The 2019 January 1 catalog is on an external HD as are most of my catalogs (see below) and it is these that remain locked. I keep a couple of catalogs on my internal HD, which are not locked, which suggests the locked problem has something to do with my external HD. But why now? Having not had an issue for a few years. As mentioned upgrading to Big Sur is the only thing I can think of.

How is the drive formatted? The format can be found in Get Info at the top section of the info list.

If you never formatted the drive for use on a Mac, it is likely NTFS which macOS can only read. You would have needed to install third-party software to allow you to write to the drive. That software may not work with Big Sur.

If it is Mac OS Extended or APFS, I don't know why you would see that.

I don't know what is going on with Photo Masters Two.

Was Photo Backup ever a Time Machine backup? It doesn't look like it is, now.

Time Machine will lock down a backup drive.

Since the catalog you posted info for before had custom access, copy and paste this command into Terminal and then copy/paste the output to here. You may have to use the Additional Text area (document icon).

After pasting that, leave a space and drag a catalog from the external that doesn't work.

ls -leO@

Do the same with this command, but drag in the folder that holds the catalog ran the command on, previously.

ls -leO@d

Both will list the ACLs, Extended Attributes, and Posix permissions for the catalog and for the folder.
