updating iphone6

We are being urged to make a security upgrade to iOS 14.4 on our phones. My iPhone6 is at iOS 12.5.1. When I try to make this security upgrade, I am told my OS is up to date. How do I make this security upgrade?

You don't, sorry, since your device cannot support iOS versions beyond 12.5.1, because of hardware incompatibility.

The new iOS 14.4 is for 6s or later iPhones only, as per this article:--> About the security content of iOS 14.4 and iPadOS 14.4 - Apple Support

Yes, version 12.5.1 contains security patches for your iPhone model.

Does the update to 12.5.1 help with the latest security threat for which iPhone owners are being urged to update to 14.4?

The iPhone 6 is too old now and it's aging hardware cannot support anything beyond iOS 12.5.1. For iOS 14.4 you need a current-gen iPhone. The 6 doesn't have enough RAM and is therefore stuck on iOS 12. But 12.5.1 also includes security updates.
