After I tap the add button, I can search for him in my contacts but his name is grayed out and I can't select his contact info as a person to add. Why is this happening?

Yes, but I actually just found the answer to my question in the below link. Apparently I linked his contact info with iCloud and Google, whatever that means... I needed to go to his contact info, scroll down and tap the iCloud link under linked contacts, then tap "use this name for unified card"
