can I rename the account without renaming the home folder

I want to change the "full name" of my Macbook's username which Apple is calling the account name. I have read that it is necessary to change the "short name" (home folder name) first, but I have also read that this is not necessary. Which is correct? I'd rather just leave the home folder name as is, if possible, as there seems to be less likelihood of totally screwing things up.

If you only want to change the "long name", then you can do so without making any other changes.


Changing the "short name" requires renaming the home folder and changing several paths as well. For anyone wanting to change the short user name here is an Apple article with instructions:
