I just got my Mac set up, and it has all the same data from my laptop. I really wanted each device to be separate, but the second I logged into my Apple ID, everything from my laptop's desktop appeared on my iMac. How do I fix this without deleting everything from both devices?

To stop iCloud syncing, go to System Preferences > Apple ID/iCloud > iCloud. You can then change your iCloud Drive settings and iCloud settings.
I think what you want turned off is "Desktop and Documents in iCloud." This is in iCloud Drive settings.
