iPhone 12 Pro will not connect to CarPlay

I use a genuine Apple USB-A to lightning cable (also tried other cables) and my iPhone 12 Pro will not connect to CarPlay. Sometimes it connects and then disconnects. It does give the "charging" icon but apparently has issues with the data connection. If I attach my wife's iPhone 10xr CarPlay works just fine. Do you think I have a bad data connection on my iPhone 12 Pro's lightning port?
