how to clear a grey cell in numbers

The grey fill on a new table is an indicator that this cell is in a Header row.

You can remove the grey fill by selecting the cell, opening the Format inspector panel (click the format brush), and choosing the Cell panel.

Click on the bar holding "color fill' to expand the pop-up menu, and choose "No fill".

Removing the fill does not change the Header row properties of cell or of the rest of the cells in that row. If you do not need the properties of a Header row, you can delete the row, making what was row 2 the new row 1.

Header rows have a few features not shared with 'body' rows. examples:

They can be 'frozen' to stay on screen while any part of the table is visible.

They permit formulas in header (or footer) rows to contain full column references to the range of cells in the column containing the formula without creating a self reference error.
