Someone wanting an iTune gift card for communication

Why does someone need an iTune Gift card for communicating? Can it be used for messaging and receiving messages? Someone told me that they needed it to communicate with me, send and receive message on Hotspot, update their computer, running out of data. Is it even possible to use iTune cards to communicate? Thinking this is a scam. Not sure if this is the place to check, but thought I'd try.
