AppleTV Surround Sound over Airplay2

I have the following setup:

  • Apple TV 4;
  • Yamaha 6030 Stereo Receiver
  • Airport Express connected to the Yamaha receiver with a toslink cable
  • The Yamaha receiver drives 5.1 speaker set in the TV room.

I have the audio output of the Apple TV connected to the Airport Express via Airplay2.

The receiver is showing that only 2.0 Stereo sound is being received.

Can I not play surround sound over airplay2 from the appleTV?

I cannot connect the Apple TV4 to the receiver with a cable; they are in completely separate rooms.

AirPlay audio from Apple TV to anything else is stereo. It is intended for music.

What an unusual setup. This is precisely why you would want them together.

Thank you Urquahart!

That is too bad, and wonder why Apple implemented it this way.

It is a strange setup, but basically my apple tv is mounted behind my tv. and there is a run of about 50 ft through conduits to connect them, which in the past has made the video flicker. I just ordered a 25 ft video, and audio extractor to run optical to the receiver.
