Apple watch pairing to new iPhone

While trying to set up my apple watch, I keep getting a notification on my iPhone that states, "unable to check for update. Checking for a software update failed because you are not connected to the internet." I am connected to the internet on my phone. My apple watch does not give me any options to connect it to the internet, only to pair with my iphone.
