Broken Screen on my MacBook Pro

Hi,

I purchased a 2017 MacBook Pro with a broken screen. The computer has been erased and reset back to factory the settings so now I would like to connect it to an external monitor so I can see and set up the computer. I have tried to connect it to an external monitor with an HDMI to Thunderbolt cord but it will not display. My fear is that the computer has to be set up first before I can connect to the monitor.

Can someone confirm or deny this and provide a possible solution?

Yes it seems you would have to set it up—before you could use it.
