Transferring iPhoto Library to external drive and it drops in GB?

Hi there!

I'm trying to clear up room on my computer. I hooked up an external drive and moved my library over. My Library is 273.41 GB and after 2 hours it transfers but the size now on the external drive is 245.67 GB. I'm afraid to delete my original Library in fear that around 28 gigs will be deleted. But the transfer looks like it went through fine. I deleted it and tried again and it did the same thing.

Am I safe to delete the original? And why did it go down in size?

Any input is greatly appreciated!!

1. Compare the size in bytes instead of GB; if that's the same, yes.

2. Drive space is split into allocation blocks. If a file doesn't take up a whole block, the rest of it won't be available for others. Smaller volumes have smaller blocks.
