Yep the update released yesterday 2/1/2021 that we have been waiting on—is merely 3.25 GB update. Once it finished downloading it it did appear to be closer to ~3.7 GB. This might be your exact machine dependent.
The Full installer is quite different and as posted above —
Big Sur—Press release states that you will need 35.5 GB of free storage when upgrading from High Sierra or newer, and 44.5 GB when upgrading from an older versions.

Nope, that's the compressed download file size. I had 125G of my 256G SSD free before the update, afterwards only 92G free.
