Hot Spots and WIFI
When using some xfinity free wifi, it allows iphones, but not macbooks. So I'd like to use my iphone as a hotspot for the wifi. How do I know if the phone using cell or wifi for my computer?

Your carrier decides whether you can use a hotspot.
Ask them for help settings it up.
