last night and again this morning, my iPhone X asked for a passcode to continue using Face ID. Last night, it finally accepted my passcode and I thought all was fine. This morning, it did it again and it would never accept my new or old passcode.

I don't want to lose my info on my phone. Is there anyway to avoid this? Screen says iPhone is disabled connect to iTunes.

If the iPhone is showing disabled, then your data is already lost. The only way to regain access to the device is to restore it to remove the passcode that is not working. If you do not have a backup, they you will not be able to restore your data.
