Other in storage
Can someone please tell me how I can use the 45GB in 'other' as I am running out of storage and the programmes take up less that half of my hard drive?

As we can see, Others storage usually varies between users. However, most files in it are necessary for the computer to function. Most applications require money to use, so let's say you want to save money. A great idea is to remove your caches! Here's how you do it:
Click on finder. Then press shift-command-g. Type in ~/Library/Caches/. Drag and drop everything into the trash bin and empty it. Do this periodically as this can build up over long usage. To empty Safari caches, just go to preferences and enable the develop menu. Then once you enable it, exit out and press develop, then select empty caches.
