MacBook spilled coffee

I just spilled coffee in my MacBook Air. I turned it off while I grabbed paper towels to mop up. I turned it back on (maybe shouldn’t have done that). I get an folder icon with a question mark in the center. Help! Is there anything I can do??

Hello delaine98,

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities. We understand that you've experienced potential liquid damage to your MacBook and are now seeing a folding with question mark at startup. This means that your startup disk is no longer available or doesn't contain a working Mac operating system. You can try the steps outlined in article, If your Mac starts up to a question mark, to see if they help.

Keep in mind, having spilled liquid on your device, you may want to have it checked out by a technician so they can assess the damage.

Mac Service and Repair

Best regards.

Yeah, should never turn on an electronics device right after a liquid spill. Should have waited a few days for things to dry out before attempting to power on. If it powers on and functions consider yourself lucky, if not you will have to have a technician inspect the internals for damages and estimate repairs. The trouble with Mac's is they do not have logical ways to allow liquids to drain from spills properly. They tend to envelop the internals and cause shorts, and all sorts of issues. Not only that but liquids like coffee then to make stuff sticky like keys and touchpad. Best of luck to you.
