Can you compete with more than one friend on an activity challenge?

Can you have a 3 way challenge where you have both friends your competing against consolidated or each separately?

From the "Compete with friends" section in:

Share your Activity and compete with friends with your Apple Watch - Apple Support

It sounds like you can only compete with one friend at a time. However from the "Start sharing" section of the same article. you can share an activity with up to 40 friends.
