Lag - Lip Sync

Hi,

I have a pair of HP's and I would love to be able to watch a video ( movie etc ) from either my iPad, MB Air or my Mac Mini + 27in Monitor using my HP speakers, the problem is when I try this ( using Airplay ) there is lag ( Lip sync ) from watching what ever to the sound coming from the speakers ( lips move on screen, sound comes out of speakers a second or 2 later ).

Before anyone asks I am on the same wifi as everything else is, so does anyone have any ideas how to fix this or is just not possible ? Also everything is unto date, I checked.

Apple bods any idea ?

Ok, update.

If I play a video which is in my TV App through my HP speakers it works ;-) Happy Days on that part.

However ( even if I have the mkv file on my desktop, not via my NAS ), I still get the lag when playing through VLC ?

Not sure how to fix that issue ?

I have tried to import the video file ( MKV ) to TV App but it won't do it ? Don't know why, any ideas anyone ?

At present this is all via my MB Air, have yet to try from my Mac Mini, i'll do that shortly.

Oh and I played a clip from iPlayer ( BBC Tv ) from my MB Air and that worked ( It didn't used to ), so another small result

Ok, here's another update, this time on my Mac Mini;

Before I go any farther I must say this, I am on Big Sur on my MB Air and all seems to work bar the small issue with the sync and VLC, on my Mac Mini I am on Catalina ( can't upgrade to BS which is a bummer ).

A couple of things:

1) when using my MB Air my HP speakers work as they should, in stereo

2) when using my Mac Mini my HP speakers don't work in stereo, its either left or right ?

3) there is a slight delay in the lip-sync on my Mac Mini, perhaps this is to do with the fact that I'm on Catalina & not BS

4) just done a test watching a video using VLC, the sync is out but using the Keys f or g I found it much easier to correct it, unlike on my MB Air ( which is on BS ).

So unsure where to go from here, if i could get my HP speakers to work in stereo on my Mac Mini that would be great, and I can sort the sync out far easier.

Oh the trials and trubulations of Apple, we love you ;-)

"AirPlay from the Mac's volume control is one speaker and doesn't understand stereo pairs."

Thanks tt2 for all your help, perhaps if there's an Apple Tech Bod out there reading this ( note the above comment ) they might pass on to others and fix this little issue. After all it is Apple to Apple products so it should kind of work guys. If the App's Music and TV can do it ( which is on my Mac's & playing through my Mac's ) surely it should it work even with a different App ( VLC ) as I'm playing it ( music or video ) through my Mac , be it the volume control ?

Thanks again tt2

Keep safe

Thanks for the reply, I'll try the TV App to see what happens, at present I use VLC, so do you have an idea how I can tweak this delay with VLC ?

One other thing, I use 2 NAS drives which I store all my media ( although I can download what ever to either my MB Air or Mini ), my question is, would this make any difference ? Everything ( including the NAS are on the same network ).

I'll let you know what happens with the TV App shortly

Another update, this is a strange one so perhaps someone can come up with an idea as to why !

I have just played a video ( Sting - Live in Berlin ) direct from my NAS, its a mp4 file, it worked fine, I then imported it to TV App which worked this time unlike the MKV file ( which didn't ), again it worked fine.

So it would seem that I can play any mp4 file be it direct from my NAS or via TV App with the Lip-Sync working fine, yet I can't using a MKV file ? Plus the fact that I can't 'import' a MKV file to TV App ?

Any ideas out there ? Does anyone know why I can't import a MKV file to the TV App ( I am talking about the Apple TV App here, just in case you are wondering ).
